Volcano Runs: RIM RUN 10 miles Start: 7 a.m.
This 10 mile Rim Run course circles the summit caldera of Kilauea, mostly along the rim, crossing rugged pahoehoe lava, passing steam vents and cinder cones, and rustling through peacefully wooded trails. No walkers allowed.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Proceed from the Kilauea Military Camp start line counterclockwise to the
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Take the left fork onto Crater Rim Trail past the
Southwest Rift Zone, over the 1982 flow, behind Keanakako'i Crater, and over the
1974 lava flows. Turn left on Chain of Craters Road to the Devastation Trail
parking lot. The trail winds behind the cider cone of Pu'u Pua'i down to Byron's
Ledge. Course marshals will direct runners left onto Crater Rim Trail, past
Waldron's Ledge, to the finish line at Kilauea Military Camp.
Volcano Runs
VOLCANO MARATHON 26.2 miles Start: 6 a.m.
Called one of the "world's toughest measured marathons," this race challenges
the most advanced and hardy endurance runners. The course covers extremely rough
and uneven terrain, starkly beautiful lava fields in the Ka'u Desert, and 1,000
foot elevation changes. Runners should have trained on trails or have
participated in trail running events and be able to finish the marathon in 7
hours and 30 minutes. Add one hour to your best time to see if you can meet this
requirement. All course marshalls and aid station volunteers will be released at
1:30 p.m. The marathon is limited to 225 participants, so register early to
guarantee participation in the race. No walkers allowed.
